The ability to change names would be nice, but I can't really say it should be open to everyone. Perhaps a character has to have been around so long, or pay a fee such as 100k.
*shrug*
I know I would use it, but not too often.

I'd be happy to change some of my chars name, would even be willing to be reported and get a temp ban but I doubt my nicks would be offensive to anybody just because they have a number.

I hate to say it but i have often wondered if i should get people to report me for this exact reason But all my names are pretty regular (I just want to change them/some)
The option one way or another would be nice

Ahem, I tried getting reported by about 5 different people... It didn't work.
Maybe need more people to report or just my name was too clean. Anyhow, I wouldn't recommend it since it's abuse of report feature.
I was sort of testing all the rumors about Anet banning names for no reason (well, name change would've been nice too), but it still doesn't make it right, I know.

I dont think it would be easy for anet to do. If it was they probably wouldnt want to, as i assume people would change their names all the time which would cause unnessessary lag.
Also for upholding rules and such it would be used by people who want to get away with acts that go against anetpolicy.
If possible i guess ok, but i dont even think there is a game where names can be changed so easily, if at all. i do know some but they arnt done automatically, and because of that those games charge real money for the service

If Anet made this feature I can see it being abused by people to get out of being reported for leeching, bad names or racial slurs, or scam artists. Just to name a few. Friends lists, ignore lists, and guild rosters could be thrown out of whack too. Not to mention the data base on available names trying to keep up. Maybe a one time only name change allowed by Anet on one character per account could be kept up by Anet staff. But imagine 2 million people wanting to change 10 toon names. It would be utter chaos. Even a tenth of that total would be more than thier staff could handle. And by this i mean the requests sent to Anet for this name change. It could take months to respond to all the emails and reset the name. This is a bad idea for many reasons im sure I have not even thought of. Delete your toon if you dont like the name or take more time in choosing it the first place.

Yes - they could do a makeover kit as an add on which might cost the same amount (real money!) as say a new character slot. Each makeover kit would allow a one time change to all characters on the account and you wouldn't be able to buy more than one in any 6 month period.
That would also generate a bit of revenue - which is important to keep Anet interested in the game.

I would love being able to change my name/apperance. It's a shame investing hundreds of hours of time (thousands for some people), and finding out you spelled your name wrong like me. :-X

every time a TV show introduces a new character a lot of people will change there name into a spin off on that, especially 12- 14 year old ones.

/signed, would be a good idea. But maybe limit it to something like character has to have over 1000 hrs playtime, then it costs 100k to do it to stop it being abused.

dont agree, i got a few characters with the names Heather, Ann, and Yuna. I got like 4 with Heather ( i was kinda digging the name Heather back then ) but now I don't like it anymore, so i'd like to change it, I don't scam, I'm not uncreative as my characters got first, and last names, why would I be selfish because i want to change my nickname? , I'm not illiterate, and well, ok. I play female characters while I'm a male in real life, but dude, I'm heterosexual + have you ever seen male monks, they just look lazy and fat ( no offence ).
